“Saxum is not just a construction project. Saxum is a project of hearts coming together. And that’s why it’s so unique”: Laying of the Last Stone

The Visitor Center Chapel

The Saxum Visitor Center is close to completion, and that includes one of its most important parts: the chapel. The altarpiece has been hung and the altar installed.

The painting, done by Spanish artist Aristides Artal, represents the moment in which the Emmaus disciples ask Jesus to stay with them (Lk 24:13-35). This scene was chosen because Saxum is located in the area between Jerusalem and Emmaus where tradition places this meeting.

“I had in mind one of those romantic landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich, in which you have small figures contemplating a majestic landscape”, says the painter about his work.

The chapel also has a special pattern of lights set in its black ceiling which simulate a starry sky. It’s not just any night sky; it replicate the constellations that were in the sky on the night that Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
